This hillside custom home needed a roof that satisfied HOA color rules, handled Boulder wind gusts, and still qualified for the manufacturer’s full system warranty. The builder asked us in after framing passed inspection so we could sequence underlayment before siding crews closed the walls.

We upgraded the original spec to a designer architectural line with Class 4 impact rating in the field, synthetic underlayment across the deck, and ice & water shield past code minimum at eaves and in valleys where snow sits longest.

Goals & constraints

• HOA palette: approved grays with minimum 30-year algae resistance
• Complex hips and a prow front — extra cut pieces and waste factor
• Balanced attic ventilation with hidden ridge profile per architect
• Coordination with solar conduit penetrations (stubbed, flashed later)

How we executed

1. Deck & dry-in: Re-nailed loose sheathing; ZIP-style coordination at wall transitions where the plans called for taped seams.
2. Underlayment: Full synthetic field; self-adhered at valleys, penetrations, and along the north eave.
3. Shingle install: Staggered courses, six-nail wind zone pattern, and color blend pulled from three bundles per slope.
4. Ventilation: Continuous ridge vent matched to calculated NFA with baffled intake at new soffit vents.
